There is no single trap or bait-station answer for every house. The suspected animal, access, children and pets, and the arrangements for checking the equipment all matter. For a Hamilton or Waikato property, compare the proposed plan rather than choosing a method from the product name alone.

A trap is intended to catch an animal. A toxic-bait station holds rodent bait; it does not normally capture the animal inside the station. Predator Free NZ’s bait-station overview explains the equipment and why checking it matters. Its conservation-scale placement guidance should not be treated as instructions for a house.
Ask what animal the device is intended for, where it would be placed and who would check it. Clarify how access by children, pets or other animals would be restricted. If removal of a caught animal is part of the arrangement, ask who is responsible and whether a return visit is included.

Ask what bait is proposed, why the station is suitable for the location and how placement and checking would be managed. Confirm what instructions apply if a station is damaged, moved or disturbed. A container does not remove the need for product-specific precautions.
The NZ EPA’s guidance on rodent poison stresses keeping it away from children and pets and following the label. Tell the team about animals and children before treatment is proposed. Avoid treating descriptions such as “secure”, “natural” or “pet-friendly” as a guarantee that no precautions are necessary.
This article does not give bait doses, trap-setting instructions or product recommendations. Use the directions for the actual equipment and product, and ask the person providing the service to explain anything unclear. If you need an option without rodenticide, ask whether an appropriate trapping approach is available for the particular problem.
A useful proposal also considers why rodents can reach the building. Our entry-point and rodent-proofing guide covers that separate conversation. To compare service inclusions, see the Hamilton rodent-control quote guide.
Explain where you have noticed activity and any equipment already in place. For the wider home service, see residential pest control. For rats or mice specifically, use the Rodent Control Hamilton page and contact the team to discuss a suitable assessment. Confirm the proposed method and precautions before booking.
