Wasp Nest Near Your House? What to Do and When to Call for Help

Wasps repeatedly flying in and out of the same gap or sheltered spot may suggest a nest nearby. Keep your distance: disturbing a nest can lead to stings. Record the location from a safe place and arrange advice rather than approaching it to confirm what is inside.

Could the activity be a wasp nest?

Repeated movement around one opening is useful information to share, but it is not a positive identification. Bees, other insects or other activity may be involved. A photo taken safely from a distance can assist an assessment. Do not block an opening or disturb the structure to investigate.

Where might people notice activity?

People may notice repeated activity around eaves, wall cavities, garden features or other sheltered areas. Describe the location, height and access from a safe distance. Tell the team if the area is close to a doorway, school route, outdoor dining area or other place people use.

Keep people and pets away

Avoid the immediate area and let others using the property know about it. Do not climb a ladder, hit the nest or try to seal an opening. If someone is stung and has serious symptoms, seek urgent medical help. Healthify's insect-sting information explains when to seek help.

Why identification matters

The Department of Conservation distinguishes introduced pest wasps from other wasps present in New Zealand. The right response depends on the species, nest and location. Do not assume that every flying insect is a wasp or that the same treatment is suitable for every situation.

What to ask before a visit

Tell the team where the activity is, whether access is difficult and if anyone nearby has a known sting allergy. Ask how the site will be assessed, what preparation is needed and whether a return visit is included. See our external pest-treatment service for wider information and contact us for a quote.

Frequently asked questions

Should I block a hole where wasps are flying?

Avoid blocking or disturbing a suspected nest entrance. Keep clear and ask for professional advice.

Can you identify a nest from a single insect?

No. A sighting can be a clue, but it does not establish where a nest is.

What if the nest is high above the ground?

Do not climb to inspect it. Describe the height and access when requesting help.

Are follow-up visits included?

Ask the team to explain the scope and any follow-up in the quote.
